Tea Palace Da Hong Pao (or Big Red Robe) Oolong is one of the oldest and most famous Oolongs produced in China.
Hailing from the Wuyi Mountains, this tea is said to have received its name when a Ming Dynasty Emperor used expensive red cloth to wrap four tea bushes in honour after their leaves were used to cure his unwell mother from a long illness. Indeed; four ancient bushes can still be found on a cliff in the Wuyi Mountains today and Da Hong Pao leaves are said to originate from these four plants. Today, Da Hong Pao Oolong is still limited in supply, earning it the distinction of being one of the most expensive teas in the world.
This delicious cup is made from pure leaves that have been rolled and lightly roasted to produce a smoky, nutty aroma and mid-brown liquor. On tasting a complex profile is revealed with distinct nutty tones complemented by cocoa notes and the lightest of peach finishes for a smooth and moreish cup.
To Enjoy
Add one dessertspoon per cup to a mug or teapot, add freshly boiled water and infuse for 3-4 minutes. Best enjoyed without milk or sweetener. Serve immediately or remove leaves to prevent spoiling

About Oolong Da Hong Pao
Da Hong Pao, also known as "Big Red Robe," is a highly revered and sought-after oolong tea that originated from the Wuyi Mountains in the Fujian province of China. It is one of the famous "rock teas" (yancha) grown in the Wuyi Mountain area, known for its unique terroir and complex flavour profile.
Da Hong Pao is traditionally grown in the Wuyi Mountain area of Fujian, China. The specific tea bushes used to produce Da Hong Pao are often located in the Zhengyan, or "original rock," area of the Wuyi Mountains, known for its rocky terrain and unique mineral-rich soil.
Da Hong Pao is a partially oxidized oolong tea, falling somewhere between green and black tea in terms of oxidation. The leaves undergo a meticulous process that includes withering, tossing, oxidation, fixation, rolling, and drying. The artful oxidation process contributes to its unique flavour.
The leaves of Da Hong Pao are dark, twisted, and robust, often with red or brown edges. The appearance is a result of the oxidation and roasting process.
Da Hong Pao is known for its rich, full-bodied flavor with notes of mineral, roasted nuts, cocoa, and a unique rocky or "yan yun" (rock rhyme) quality. The tea has a long-lasting aftertaste and can be steeped multiple times, with each infusion revealing different layers of flavor.
